Patricia Alander
Patty is interested in a variety of media, and the gallery features
her sawdust fired pottery, precious metal clay jewelry, and colored
clay monotypes. She enjoys the dance of color in both her pottery
and prints.
The monotypes are made by layering
colored slip onto a clay slab. After building up enough color
and gestural marks, Patty pulls a print. The top surface of the
slab becomes the bottom layer of the print. Some of the bottom
layer shows through and some of the next layer becomes visible
too. Although she plans what the monotype will look like, Patty
never knows for sure how much of the next layer will be exposed.
Patty is constantly experimenting and
doing what she can to emphasize composition with color, however
the end result always has a bit of the unexpected. It's the dichotomy
of the expected and the element of surprise - this dance of color
- that she enjoys most.
